DVSA Approved MOT Test Station · Example demo station
Squealing, grinding, a pulsing pedal, pulling to one side, a brake warning light or a handbrake that won't hold. Brakes are the third biggest MOT fail category and the one nobody should gamble on. The check is free, every measurement is photographed, and most pads and discs are fitted the same day.
What the noises mean
- High-pitched squeal — often the wear indicator on the pads telling you they're nearly done, sometimes glazed pads or dust.
- Grinding or scraping — the pad material has gone and metal is on metal. Stop using the car if you can; every mile is scoring the disc.
- Pulsing or juddering through the pedal — a warped or unevenly worn disc.
- Pulling to one side — a sticking caliper or a collapsed flexible hose.
- Spongy pedal, or one that sinks — air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak. Not one to leave.
- Handbrake needs more clicks than it used to — rear shoes or pads, a seized cable or caliper.
- Brake warning light — low fluid, worn pads on cars with sensors, or a handbrake switch. We read the code before guessing.
The free brake check
Wheels off, and we measure it all: pad thickness on every corner, disc thickness and condition against the manufacturer's minimum, calipers for sticking and leaks, flexible hoses for cracking and bulging, pipes for corrosion, and the fluid's moisture content. Everything is photographed and the numbers go on your quote, so you can see exactly why something needs doing and how much life is left in the rest. No obligation, and if it's all fine we say so.
What we fit and what it costs
- Bosch and Lucas pads and discs as standard, matched to your car, with the manufacturer's warranty.
- Discs and pads replaced in axle pairs, never one side, so the car brakes evenly.
- Calipers freed off or replaced, hoses and pipes renewed, the system bled and road-tested.
- Brake fluid change £84 inc VAT — recommended every two years because old fluid absorbs water, lowers its boiling point and corrodes the ABS unit.
Price: the check is free; pads and discs are quoted per axle for your exact car before any work starts, and most are fitted the same day. Payment Assist is available on larger jobs.
Brakes questions
How much are brake pads and discs?
It depends on the car and whether the discs need doing with the pads. We measure first, free, then quote per axle with parts and labour itemised, before any work. Most pads and discs are fitted the same day.
Do I need discs as well as pads?
Only if the discs are below the manufacturer's minimum thickness, scored, warped or lipped. We measure them and show you the figures; new pads on worn discs wear out fast and can judder.
Is a squeal always worn pads?
Usually the wear indicator, but sometimes glaze, dust or a missing anti-squeal shim. The free check tells you which, and you only pay for what's needed.
Will worn brakes fail my MOT?
Yes. Pads below the limit, scored or thin discs, leaks, corroded pipes and an uneven brake test on the rollers are all fails, and a badly worn one is a dangerous grading. Have them checked before the test rather than after.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Every two years on most cars. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers the boiling point and causes the spongy pedal you feel after hard use. £84 inc VAT, and it can be added to any service.
