Turbo & EGR repairs in Millbrook. Limp mode found, not guessed.

DVSA Approved MOT Test Station · Example demo station

Loss of power, limp mode on the motorway, black smoke under load, a whistle or whine that wasn't there before, or an EGR or boost fault code. Turbo and EGR problems share symptoms with much cheaper faults, so the diagnosis comes first and the expensive part comes last.

Symptoms

  • Limp mode — the car cuts power to protect itself. Often a boost pressure fault, an EGR fault or a blocked DPF; the codes tell us which.
  • Loss of power, sluggish pick-up — a boost leak, a sticking turbo actuator or variable-vane mechanism, or an EGR valve stuck open.
  • Black smoke under acceleration — over-fuelling for the air available: EGR, boost or injector problems.
  • Blue smoke, oil consumption — turbo oil seals, or crankcase breather problems that mimic them.
  • Whistle, whine or siren noise — a boost leak, or a turbo with a damaged wheel or worn bearings.
  • Rough idle, hesitation, engine light — an EGR valve carboned up and sticking, very common on diesels used for short trips.

What we do

  1. Full diagnostic scan with live boost, EGR and airflow data, then a smoke test of the intake for boost leaks — split hoses and intercooler pipes are the cheap fix that gets missed.
  2. EGR valves cleaned where the valve is sound, replaced where it isn't; actuators and vacuum lines tested; variable-vane turbos checked for a sticking mechanism.
  3. Turbos replaced only when the shaft play, the seals or the wheel say so, with the oil feed and return lines checked and the oil changed — most turbo failures are an oil problem first.
  4. Road test with live data to confirm the boost is back where it should be and the light stays off.

Price: diagnosis at £48 per hour inc VAT; EGR cleaning, actuators, hoses and turbos quoted per car before any work. DPF problems are covered on their own page: DPF cleaning →

Questions

Turbos & EGR questions

Is limp mode always the turbo?

No. It is the car protecting itself from any fault it considers serious: a boost leak, an EGR fault, a blocked DPF, a sensor. Reading the codes and the live data tells us which, and it is very often not the turbo.

Can an EGR valve be cleaned instead of replaced?

Often, yes. If the valve itself is sound and it is just carboned up, cleaning restores it for a fraction of the price. If the motor or the position sensor has failed, it needs replacing. We check which.

Should I have the EGR blanked or deleted?

No. It fails the MOT emissions test on many cars, it is illegal on the road, and it usually makes the car run worse. We fix the fault instead.

Why did my turbo fail?

Most turbo failures are oil related: old oil, a blocked feed pipe, or an engine run low. That is why we check the oil feed and return and change the oil with any turbo replacement, otherwise the new one goes the same way.
