Glow plugs, injectors & fuel system repairs in Millbrook. Cold-start trouble, misfires and smoke.

DVSA Approved MOT Test Station · Example demo station

A diesel that churns for ages on a cold morning, a misfire or a rattle at idle, white smoke on start-up, black smoke under load, a smell of fuel, or a glow plug warning light. Fuel system faults get expensive fast if they're guessed at, so we test the plugs and the injectors individually before anything is ordered.

Symptoms

  • Long cranking or a rough, smoky start on cold mornings that clears once warm — glow plugs, or the glow plug relay or module.
  • Glow plug light staying on or flashing — a plug or circuit fault the car has logged, or on many cars a different engine fault using the same light.
  • Misfire, rattle or knock at idle, uneven running — an injector delivering too much or too little, or a chafed injector wiring loom.
  • White smoke on start-up — unburnt fuel: glow plugs or an injector. Black smoke under load — over-fuelling: injectors, EGR, boost. Blue smoke — oil, not fuel.
  • Smell of diesel, a wet patch by the engine, chuffing noise — a leaking injector seal or a blowing injector washer.
  • Loss of power, hesitation, cutting out — a blocked fuel filter, a tired lift pump or low rail pressure.

What we do

  1. Read the codes and the live data: rail pressure, injector correction values and cylinder balance tell us which cylinder and which component before anything is removed.
  2. Glow plugs tested individually, then replaced with the engine warmed and the correct tooling and technique, because a snapped plug on an aluminium head turns a small job into a large one.
  3. Injectors leak-off and return tested; cleaned, reconditioned or replaced as the results dictate, and coded to the engine where the car requires it.
  4. Fuel filters, lift pumps, high-pressure pumps and fuel lines replaced with quality parts; the system primed and the car road-tested.

Price: diagnosis at £48 per hour inc VAT; plugs, injectors and pumps quoted per car before any work starts. A fuel system treatment is available as a servicing add-on for mild injector deposits. Servicing add-ons →

Questions

Glow plugs & injectors questions

Do I need all the glow plugs replacing?

We test each one. If one has failed the others are usually the same age, and it is normally cheaper to do the set while the parts are off than to come back for the next one, but it is your call and we'll show you the readings.

Why is a glow plug replacement sometimes expensive?

On some engines the plugs seize in the head and can snap on removal. We warm the engine, use the right tooling and take our time; if one is stuck we tell you before forcing it and explain the options.

Can injectors be cleaned rather than replaced?

Sometimes. Mild deposits respond to a proper treatment; an injector that is worn or leaking internally needs reconditioning or replacing. The leak-off test tells us which.

Is white smoke on start-up serious?

A puff on a frosty morning that clears in seconds is normal. Persistent white smoke and a rough start means unburnt fuel — glow plugs or an injector — and it gets worse and dearer if left.
