Failed with us or somewhere else, the certificate is a list of jobs, and each one is graded dangerous, major or advisory. We quote every item with a photo so you can see what the tester saw, fix what you approve, and retest for free when we've done the work. Want the fail explained first? Ask Lois.
What the grades mean
- Dangerous — the car must not be driven until it's fixed, not even home. Tyres below the limit, a brake that isn't working, a broken spring, structural corrosion. If you failed with us, leave the car; if you failed elsewhere, we'll collect it.
- Major — a fail. If your old certificate is still in date you can drive it, but you're responsible for it being roadworthy; if the old certificate has expired you may only drive to a pre-booked repair or retest. The rules in full →
- Minor / advisory — passes, but it's recorded and it will be a fail next year. Worth doing while the car's with us.
The most common fails, and what they cost to put right
- Lights — bulbs, lenses, aim, number-plate lights. Usually the cheapest fix on the sheet. Electrical →

How it works
- Send us the certificate (or it's already on our screen if you failed here). Every item goes on a quote, photographed, with a price per item and a plain-English note on what it is.
- You approve the items you want done from your phone. Nothing is added without your say-so, and we'll tell you which items are the "must do" for the retest and which can wait.
- We do the work, then the retest. Free when we've done the repairs. If you have the repairs done elsewhere and bring the car back within 10 working days, a partial retest is free when we do the repairs, £10 if repaired elsewhere.

MOT failure repairs questions
My car failed at another garage. Can you do the repairs?
Yes. Send us a photo of the certificate or the registration and we'll pull the result from the DVSA record, quote every item, and you decide. If the fail includes a dangerous item we'll collect the car rather than have you drive it.
Is the retest free?
Free when we've done the repairs. If you have them done elsewhere and bring the car back within 10 working days, a partial retest is £10. After 10 working days it is a full test again.
Can I drive my car after a fail?
Not with a dangerous defect. With majors only, you can drive it if your old certificate is still in date and the car is roadworthy; if it has expired, only to a pre-booked repair or retest. The fine for driving without an MOT is up to £1,000, and up to £2,500 and points for a dangerous vehicle.
Do I have to fix the advisories?
Not to pass, but they are on the record and they are next year's fails. We'll quote them separately so you can choose, and tell you which are worth doing now.
