What we look at
Tread depth across the width of each tyre, pressures set to the figure on your door pillar, sidewalls checked for cuts, bulges and cracking, and the wear pattern read — because uneven wear usually points at a suspension or alignment problem we can fix, and a new tyre on a bent arm just wears out again. You get a straight answer on how much life is left and no pressure to buy.
The legal limit is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. Below that it's a dangerous MOT defect, the car can't be driven away from the test, and it's up to £2,500 and three points per tyre on the road. Most tyres feel fine right up to that point.
TPMS faults
Since 2015 a tyre pressure monitoring light that stays on has been an MOT fail on cars first registered from 2012 — even if the tyres are fine. The usual causes are a sensor with a flat battery (they last around 7–10 years), a sensor damaged during a tyre change, a valve corroded through, or simply a system that was never reset after new tyres.
We read the system with dealer-level diagnostic equipment, find which sensor is at fault, and fit and programme the replacement. Where the car uses the ABS sensors to spot a soft tyre instead (no sensors in the wheels), the fix is often just a proper reset after the pressures are set. PuncturesRepair or replace?
A puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6mm across, can usually be repaired properly with a plug-and-patch from the inside. Anything in the shoulder or sidewall, a tyre that's been driven flat, or one already near the limit needs replacing. We don't repair punctures in-house: we'll tell you which it is, then the repair or the new tyre is done by our local tyre partner, arranged by us, so you still only deal with Garage Command Centre.

Tyres themselves are supplied and fitted through our local tyre partner. We size them from your registration, quote you the options (budget through to premium, with an honest view on which is worth it for your car), and sort the fitting while the car is with us for anything else — so a tyre found during an MOT or service doesn't mean a second garage and a second trip.

Is the tyre check really free?
Yes. Tread, pressures, condition and wear pattern on all four, no charge and no obligation. If you need tyres we'll quote; if you don't, we'll tell you.
Will a tyre pressure warning light fail my MOT?
If the car was first registered on or after 1 January 2012 and the TPMS light stays on, yes — it's a fail regardless of the actual tyre pressures. Get it diagnosed before the test.
Can my puncture be repaired?
Usually, if it's in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6mm across, and the tyre hasn't been driven flat. Shoulder and sidewall damage can't be repaired safely. We'll look and tell you, and the repair itself is done by our local tyre partner, arranged through us.
Do you fit tyres yourselves?
Tyres are supplied and fitted through our local tyre partner, arranged by us. You book with Garage Command Centre, deal with Garage Command Centre and pay Garage Command Centre; we sort the rest.
Why are my tyres wearing on one edge?
Inside- or outside-edge wear almost always means the alignment is out or a suspension part is worn. We check that during the free tyre check, because fitting new tyres without fixing it just wears the new ones the same way.
