Clutch replacement & dual-mass flywheels in Millbrook. Diagnosed properly, photo-quoted first.

DVSA Approved MOT Test Station · Example demo station

Slipping, a biting point at the top of the pedal, judder, a burning smell on a hill start. We'll confirm it's the clutch and not the hydraulics, tell you whether the flywheel is coming with it, and put a price in front of you before a spanner is picked up.

Price

What a clutch replacement costs

Most clutch replacements fall between £400–£900. Where the dual-mass flywheel also needs replacing, we'll tell you before any work starts — everything is photo-quoted first, always.

The spread is the car, not the garage: how the gearbox comes out, whether the clutch has a built-in slave cylinder, and what the parts for your model cost. Your quote is itemised — parts and labour on separate lines, the flywheel as its own line if it's needed — so you can see exactly where the money goes. Payment Assist can split the bill into interest-free instalments.

Symptoms

Is it the clutch?

  • Slipping — the revs climb but the car doesn't pick up speed, worst uphill or in a high gear.
  • High biting point — the pedal is almost fully up before the drive takes.
  • Judder pulling away, or a shudder through the pedal.
  • A hot, acrid smell after a hill start or towing.
  • Hard to select gears, especially first and reverse from a standstill — sometimes the clutch isn't releasing, sometimes it's the hydraulics.
  • A rattle at tickover that stops when you press the pedal — that's usually the dual-mass flywheel, not the clutch plate.

A clutch typically lasts 70,000–100,000 miles, but town driving, towing and riding the pedal wear it far faster than motorway miles.

What we do

The job, properly

  1. Confirm it. A slipping clutch is easy to spot on a road test; a stiff or spongy pedal often points at the master or slave cylinder instead, which is a far smaller bill. We check before we quote.
  2. Check the flywheel. On most modern diesels and many petrols the clutch bolts to a dual-mass flywheel. We measure its free play with the gearbox out; a worn one destroys a new clutch. If it needs replacing you're told before anything is fitted.
  3. Fit a complete kit. Plate, cover and release bearing, plus the concentric slave cylinder where it's built into the bearing, with quality parts that carry the manufacturer's warranty.
  4. Refill and road-test. Gearbox oil topped up or renewed, the hydraulics bled, then a proper road test before you get the keys back.
Dual-mass flywheels

Is it the clutch or the flywheel?

On most modern diesels and many petrols the flywheel is two plates joined by springs, which soak up the engine's torque pulses so the gearbox doesn't rattle and the drive feels smooth. Those springs and the bearing between the plates wear, the flywheel develops free play, and every clutch operation and gear change knocks it. From the driver's seat a worn flywheel and a worn clutch can sound alike, which is why we check both before quoting either.

  • Rattle or chatter at idle that stops or changes when you press the clutch pedal.
  • Vibration through the pedal or the floor, especially pulling away.
  • A clunk or thump as the drive takes up or on the overrun.
  • Judder on take-off that a new clutch didn't cure.
  • A harsh mechanical rattle as the engine turns over on starting.

With the gearbox out we measure the flywheel's rotational free play and check for heat spots and cracks against the manufacturer's limits. If it's within them, it stays and you're told so. If it's worn, it's replaced with the clutch kit in one job, so the labour is paid once, and it's shown as its own line on the quote. Where a well-proven solid flywheel conversion exists for the car and makes financial sense, we'll offer it and explain the trade-off: a little more vibration, a lot more durability.

Repair while it's out

With the gearbox off, things that are normally expensive to reach become cheap: a leaking crankshaft seal, a weeping gearbox input seal, a tired engine mount. If we spot one we'll photograph it and give you the option, and we'll tell you honestly when it isn't worth doing.

Questions

Clutch questions

How much is a clutch replacement in Millbrook?

Most clutch replacements fall between £400–£900. Where the dual-mass flywheel also needs replacing, we'll tell you before any work starts — everything is photo-quoted first, always.

Do I need a new flywheel with the clutch?

Not always. We measure the dual-mass flywheel with the gearbox out and only replace it if it's worn. If it is, fitting it with the clutch means paying the labour once rather than twice, and it's shown as a separate line on your quote so you can see exactly what it adds.

What is a solid flywheel conversion?

A single-piece flywheel and matching clutch that replaces the dual-mass unit. It's cheaper and doesn't wear the same way, at the cost of a little more vibration and noise. On some cars it's a good option; on others it isn't, and we'll tell you which yours is.

Can a worn flywheel damage a new clutch?

Yes. Heat, free play and a scored friction face wreck a new clutch plate quickly. That's why we won't fit a clutch to a flywheel we haven't measured.

Can I keep driving on a slipping clutch?

For a short while, gently, but it only gets worse and a clutch that lets go completely leaves you stranded. Heat from a slipping clutch can also damage the flywheel, turning a clutch job into a clutch-and-flywheel job. Book it in early.

How long does it take?

Usually a day. We'll tell you when you book, and we can collect and return the car free locally if you can't get to Enterprise Park.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes. Payment Assist splits the bill into interest-free monthly instalments; apply from the quote on your phone.
