MOT vs service: what's the difference?
"It's just passed its MOT" is one of the most misunderstood sentences in motoring. It means the car met a minimum standard on one particular day. It says nothing about how well it's been looked after.
The MOT: a legal inspection
The MOT is a government-set test of whether the car is safe and clean enough to be on the road today. The tester checks lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, structure, emissions, visibility and so on against a pass/fail standard. Crucially, the tester is looking for the point at which something becomes a fail — not whether it's in good condition. Brake pads at 1.6mm pass; they'll be metal-on-metal in a month.
The MOT doesn't involve any maintenance. Nothing is changed, topped up or adjusted. The engine, gearbox and clutch aren't inspected at all beyond emissions and leaks. £45, VAT-exempt, once a year by law.
The service: looking after the car
A service is preventive maintenance to the manufacturer's schedule: oil and filters changed, fluids topped up, wear items measured and reported, and the things the MOT doesn't look at — belts, plugs, coolant, gearbox, air-con — checked before they become a problem. It keeps the warranty valid, keeps the service history (and the resale value) intact, and is where the "you'll want to think about those pads before winter" conversation happens.
What neither of them is
Neither is a guarantee. An MOT is a snapshot; a service is a schedule. A car can pass an MOT with a clutch about to fail, and a freshly serviced car can still pick up a nail on the way home. Both together, though, is about as close as it gets to knowing where you stand.
Do them together
Most people's MOT and service fall due at the same time of year anyway. Booking both in one visit means one trip, one day without the car, and — because we've had the wheels off for the service — very few surprises in the MOT. Compare our service levels and add the £45 MOT when you book.
